Rooted in Faith, Built on Generosity
Our History

A Dream That Became a Legacy

In 1988, the late Bishop Timothy J. Harrington shared a powerful vision in the Catholic Free Press—a dream where committed benefactors would come together to help families in need afford a Catholic education for their children. He believed that no child should be denied the opportunity to learn in an environment rooted in faith, discipline, and academic excellence simply because of financial hardship.

That dream took shape through the dedication of the late William O’Brien, who became the founding Chairperson of what would become the Adopt-A-Student Program. With the support of a devoted Steering Committee, the program was launched to make Catholic education accessible to more students across the Diocese of Worcester.

The Reality

Since its inception more than 35 years ago, the Adopt-A-Student Program has grown into a powerful force for change, helping hundreds of families realize the gift of Catholic education.

  • Over $4.3 million in tuition assistance grants have been awarded

  • More than 1,300 scholarships have been presented, supporting students for one year and, in many cases, through their full academic journey

  • Graduates have gone on to attend top colleges and universities, including:
Anna Maria College, Assumption University, Boston College, Clark University, Cornell, College of the Holy Cross, Nichols College, Princeton, Seton Hall, the University of Massachusetts, University of New Hampshire, and many others

What began as a dream has become a living legacy—one that continues to grow thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors, and community partners.
